About Us

Canadian Groundfish Research & Conservation Society

The Canadian Groundfish Research and Conservation Society (CGRCS) was established in 1994 with the primary goal of ensuring the conservation and sustainability of Canada’s groundfish stocks. The Society focuses on supporting the economic health of the groundfish trawl industry while promoting proper management practices for the groundfish fisheries in BC. Through collaboration, research, and advocacy, the CGRCS plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance between ecological sustainability and the continued success of the BC Trawl Groundfish industry. The Society’s mission is not only to protect the resource itself, but also to ensure the economic stability of the sector and the wellbeing of those involved in it.

Our Members

The CGRCS comprises a diverse group of stakeholders who are directly involved in the groundfish trawl industry. This membership includes individuals holding groundfish trawl T and FT licences, as well as other participants such as crew members, fish buyers, and processing companies. Each of these members plays a critical role in the trawl industry, and their collective efforts help shape the direction of the Society’s work. As a member-funded society, CGRCS relies on the active participation and financial support of its members to carry out its activities. This model ensures that the Society remains responsive to the needs and interests of the groundfish community while working to safeguard the long-term sustainability of the resource and industry.

Striking a balance between sustainability and economic viability for coastal communities.

Conservation of Groundfish Stocks

The CGRCS believes that collaboration is key to achieving our goals. We actively collaborate with the other sectors whose fisheries fall under the Groundfish umbrella: Halibut, Sablefish, Inside Rockfish, Outside Rockfish, Lingcod, and Dogfish fisheries and other organizations that share similar objectives. Through partnerships and joint management efforts, we amplify our impact, pooling resources and expertise to address challenges facing the industry and groundfish populations.

Sustainability of Canadian Groundfish Fisheries

The CGRCS is dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our Trawl fishery, in conjunction with the other fisheries that make up Canadian Groundfish. This includes advocating for the responsible management of fishing quotas, studying the impact of fishing practices on marine ecosystems, and supporting policies that maintain a healthy balance between industry needs and environmental preservation.

Member Engagement and Support

As a member-funded society, the CGRCS is committed to engaging and supporting our members. We facilitate opportunities for networking, sharing best practices, and keeping our community informed about the latest research, regulations, and industry developments. By providing these resources, we ensure our members are well-equipped to make informed decisions and contribute to the sustainability.

Advocacy and Policy Development

The CGRCS works closely with government bodies and policymakers to advocate for regulations and policies that foster both the economic viability of the industry and the protection of groundfish resources. Through research, consultation, and policy recommendations, we aim to create a regulatory environment that supports responsible fisheries management and the long-term success of the industry.

The Canadian Groundfish and Research Conservation Society collaborates with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to conduct various research surveys each year. These scientific studies are fully funded by groundfish licence holders. This investment in stock assessment data and status reports helps determine Total Allowable Catch. On top of that, fisheries independent surveys collecting biological data from groundfish species allows the CGRCS to better understand the impact of environmental changes on groundfish populations.

Advancing Science for Sustainable Groundfish Fisheries

Collaboration

The CGRCS is proud to collaborate with the Deep Sea Trawler Association of BC (DSTA) in our shared mission to promote the conservation and sustainability of Canada’s groundfish stocks. Our collaboration is founded on a mutual commitment to safeguarding BC’s marine ecosystems while ensuring the economic wellbeing of the BC Trawl Groundfish industry.

Together, the DSTA and CGRCS work closely to collect vital research, participate in initiatives, and uphold high standards for responsible fishing practices. Our partnership is instrumental in advancing the sustainability of BC groundfish fisheries and strengthening the fishing industry’s long-term viability. By aligning our efforts, we ensure that BC Trawl Groundfish remains a trusted and sustainable seafood choice, contributing to the health of the environment and the continued success of the industry
